If you haven’t already set up a blog, now is the time to do it! I realise that at the moment all your prospective readers are likely to be insanely busy, but soon they will be hitting the big Christmas break and there will be much more time to engage with you. So be ready for them! When you’re writing blog-posts, try to think of lots of different kinds of topic: accounts of people you’ve met, places you’ve been to, reviews of books that you’ve read. Perhaps you’d like to include some poems, humorous pieces or interviews. There are three golden rules: make your blog as interesting as you can, don’t be spiteful or derogatory about others, and never use it to sell yourself directly. Bald sales messages such as ‘Buy My Book’ are likely to have the opposite of the effect that you intend, by turning off your readers.
If you still don’t have a blog and wonder which software to choose, Blogger (www.blogger.com) is used by many writers and it’s free. Personally, I prefer WordPress (www.WordPress.com). It charges a modest annual fee, but to my mind offers very attractive layouts and is easy to use. However, the choice is yours. If you’d like to visit my blog, incidentally, I’d be delighted to meet you there: www.christinajamesblog.com
